Camping with kids: how to keep them safe & entertained in the great outdoors

Updated: Nov 18

Ah, kids and camping trips. The promise not to whine on the drive down... the packing of bits of LEGO in a rucksack the size of mum's purse. It's guaranteed success story, right?

Camping with kids can be a wonderful experience for the whole family, but it can also present some challenges (read: can be a living hell) when it comes to keeping them safe and entertained. Here are some tips on how to make your camping trip with kids that bit smoother:

1. Safety first: Before you set off on your camping trip, make sure that you have all the necessary safety gear, such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and a means of communication (your phone, basically. Or 'Smoke Signals 101' book). Also, teach your children about campfire safety, and make sure that they understand the importance of staying within a designated camping area.

2. Plan activities in advance: To keep your children entertained, plan fun activities in advance such as nature walks, fishing, and outdoor games. This can also help to keep them occupied and tire them out, so they are more likely to sleep well at night. Picking patterns in stars is always a good distraction.

3. Bring entertainment: To keep children entertained while they're inside the tent or after dark, bring books, flashcards, and other small games that can be played inside the tent. Consider bringing a portable DVD player or tablet to play movies or (educational) videos. OK, so probably not educational.

4. Pack for all weather: When camping with kids, it's essential to pack for all weather conditions. Bring extra blankets, rain gear, and clothing in case of unexpected changes in the weather. Also, make sure that everyone has warm sleeping bags, even if the forecast calls for mild weather.

5. Keep the kids involved: Make sure to involve your children in the planning and preparation of your camping trip. This can help them feel a sense of ownership and responsibility, and also help them appreciate the experience more. They can help plan meals, pack their own bags and be responsible for small chores, such as finding sticks for the fire.

6. Learn and explore together: Camping is a great opportunity to learn and explore nature together as a family. Encourage your children to observe the environment around them and to learn about the flora and fauna (take a book). Also, they can learn the basics of outdoor skills such as setting up a tent, building a fire, or orienteering.

7. Set expectations: Before the trip, make sure that the kids are aware of what to expect and what the rules are for the trip. This can help with behavior and safety, and stop them wandering off/playing with bears/poking beehives etc.

You don't need us to tell you that camping with kids can be a wonderful bonding experience for families, but it's definitely a good idea to be prepared and keep the children's safety and entertainment in mind. If things go wrong, you might be a long way from help.
