We've all been there – shoes parked at the side of the tent in the camping store while we shuffle about inside, padding out the bare minimum size we think we could live in for a couple of nights.
What's the golden rule? There isn't one. OK, here's one (of sorts): two people need at least a two man tent.
Three people need at least a three man tent. You get the idea. The fact is, though, you may want more – sometimes a lot more – space than a tent's how-many-men designation.
When it comes to choosing a backpacking tent, you certainly do need to spend time thinking about the interior space of the tent to ensure that it is suitable for your needs. Too small, and you'll be falling over your camp mate.
Too large? Well, you're rattling around in there like a pea in a drum.
Here are a few things to consider when understanding the interior space needs of your backpacking tent:
Number of people: The first thing to consider when determining the interior space needs of your tent is the number of people who will be using it. Make sure to choose a tent that is large enough to comfortably accommodate everyone who will be sleeping inside. Consider going slightly bigger than the bare minimum if you've plenty room to pack your tent in the car and it's not too heavy.
Sleeping arrangements: Think about how you will be sleeping inside the tent. If you prefer to sleep on your side, you may need more space in your tent than someone who sleeps on their back. Additionally, if you will be sleeping with your gear inside the tent, you may need more room to store it. Many larger tents, of course, have individual rooms. Think long and hard about how you'll use your tent now and in the future before buying.
Length and width: Look at the dimensions of the tent and consider how much space you will need for you and your gear. Some tents are designed with a longer length to accommodate taller individuals, while others may have a wider width to provide more room to move around. It can be good to have space at your feet to park your gear, rather than trying to wedge it between you and your camping buddy.
Height: The height of a tent can also be an important factor to consider, especially if you're on the lofty side or plan on spending a lot of time sitting up inside the tent. Make sure to choose a tent with a sufficient peak height to allow you to sit up comfortably.
Weight and packed size: If you're backpacking, the weight and packed size of the tent will be important considerations. You'll want a tent that is both lightweight and compact enough to easily pack into your backpack.
To calculate how much interior space you're likely to need in your tent, you can use a simple formula: length x width x height. This will give you the total cubic feet of space inside the tent. Don't be afraid to lie down on the bedroom floor and measure it all out. Use tape to get a clearer idea of the floor space.
If you have the option, it's a good idea to try out a tent or set it up in your backyard before you take it on a backpacking trip to get a better sense of the interior space.
If you get it wrong first time, stick the tent on Craigslist. Your very first tent probably won't be your last.
